“HELP! I’m a curly cord native in an iPhone world!” If you’re completely overwhelmed with the technology of 2024, it helps to simplify. We can’t help you turn on your TV if you don’t have a streaming service (we’re still trying to figure that one out ourselves), but a cheat sheet for basic iPhone navigation is a must-have.

The truth is an iPhone is only complicated if you want it to be. It allows you access to an endless world of exploring, entertainment, research…a virtual computer in the palm of your hand. But if you want to simply have the convenience of communicating wherever and whenever you desire, we recommend a store employee or loved one help you with its setup. Then, it’s as easy as 1-2-3:

Unlocking the Phone

Your phone will lock automatically when not in use. This ensures that only those you wish to use the phone may do so. (Although you can disable this feature, we don’t recommend it. It ensures that no one else can use it if you happen to misplace the phone.)

Depending on the model of your iPhone, simply tap the screen or push a side button to “wake up” the phone. Swipe up on the screen and you will then see the passcode screen. If you set your phone with Face ID, simply look directly at your phone. If not, enter the passcode when prompted. (You will have chosen one during setup of your phone.)

Making a Phone Call

Once your iPhone is unlocked, you will have access to your Home Screen.  Here there is no end to the world that you may encounter if you wish, but DO NOT be intimidated by all the options you have. If you simply want to make a phone call, the only icon you need to care about is that little green phone. Tap it, and you will get a list of all the phone numbers you have entered as your contacts. Simply tap on the name, and the phone will automatically dial the number.

Texting a Message

Touch the Messages app on your screen. From there, touch the icon in the top right corner that looks like a piece of paper and pencil. Tap on it and a keyboard will appear. At the “to” prompt, type in the name of the person you wish to text. Their phone number will pop up if the number is saved in your phone (again, essential numbers should all be added during setup to make this process as direct as possible.)  Tap the name, and the phone will list his/her number. If not saved, simply add number and start texting by tapping the field at the bottom (next to the + sign.) When you’ve completed your text, locate the blue (or green) arrow to the right of your message. Tap it and your message will send immediately.

IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY:  Your iPhone dials 9-1-1 in several ways. In the event of a fall or accident, the easiest is for you to simply say, “Siri, dial emergency services.” Even a locked iPhone will respond accordingly.

The technological world can be an endless maze to new explorations. It can also be a lifeline to those you love and sometimes require for assistance. In that case, it’s as easy as 1-2-3.
