As the summer heat intensifies it’s important for seniors to stay cool and comfortable. Preventing dehydration and overheating is key to everyone’s health, but especially, older adults. Here are some fun indoor activities to keep seniors entertained while avoiding the dog days of summer!

1. Get Crafty

Expressing oneself through art projects can be an exciting way to stimulate creativity and can even be therapeutic. Try a new project by purchasing pre-made kits or using online platforms that provide tutorials. Knitting, scrapbooking, or painting are great ways to explore your creative side.

2. Explore the World Virtually

As traveling may no longer be the easiest option, especially in the heat, technology has made it possible to see the world from the comfort of your (air conditioned) living room. Virtual travel can be the gateway to getting to those bucket list places without a passport. Dive into virtual tours of museums, historical sites, and breathtaking landscapes. Many of these platforms create an immersive experience making it feel as though you’re there. Expand the feeling of being there without leaving your chair with native foods, wine and even clothing.

3. Board Games and Puzzles

Board games and puzzles are never a bad option for staying cool and intellectually stimulated. These offer a delightful way to pass time while also exercising your mind. Games like Scrabble, Chess or Bingo can help build relationships with those around you and can even be played online with family or friends. Jigsaw puzzles are another good way to stretch your mind and keep you mentally sharp. When your puzzle is completed, make it a trophy for your living space and have it matted and framed to show off your skills to visitors.

4. Attempt a New Recipe

Why not take this time inside to try something new? Cooking or baking can be a fun (and delicious) way to spend your day. Try experimenting with a new dish you’ve been eyeing or even refining an old recipe by adding some new ingredients. This could also be a fun group activity where everyone can partake in the yummy results.

5. Take Up Indoor Gardening

Bring a touch of nature inside with you by indoor gardening. You can easily grow herbs on your windowsill or patio, tend to houseplants, or even start a mini vegetable garden if space allows. This creates a rewarding hobby but also adds a touch of greenery to brighten up your living space.

While outdoor activities may need to be put on hold to avoid summer’s high temps, there are plenty of captivating indoor options for seniors to enjoy. These activities not only help expand one’s mind, but they also allow you to explore new hobbies and provide entertainment…all while promoting mental stimulation and emotional well-being. Here’s to a summer of fun…without the blaring sun and heat!
