We know that older adults that have consistent social stimulation have less risk of depression and a longer life span. However, a new study found that interacting with a larger population outside a person’s immediate network of family and friends may offer even more benefits.
The study, published Feb. 20, 2019, in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, found that older adults who interacted with people beyond their usual social circle of family and close friends were more likely to have higher levels of physical activity, greater positive moods, and fewer negative feelings.
As we age, opportunities to socialize become more limited. This year has been particularly tough with the pandemic and social distancing measures in place.
