The goal of every senior should not only be to live longer, but healthier! You’ve worked hard to get to this season of life, so you want to have as much energy and fulfillment in it as possible!
Without question, heart health continues to be the foremost focal point of seniors. According to The National Institute of Health (NIH), seniors need a solid variety of foods to fight heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a host of other diseases common in the senior years.
The NIH recommends plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables plus foods high in Vitamin B12. Many cereals contain B12 or you can ask your doctor about taking supplements of this crucial vitamin! Great seasonings are not only a plus in terms of flavor, but they are also a great alternative to additives that contain high amounts of sodium, something that most seniors have been encouraged to reduce.
Parkview Senior Living knows the significance of heart health for its residents. Its staff also knows that healthy eating certainly does not mean a sacrifice of delicious flavors! A recent stroll through one of Parkview’s facilities produced some fun conversations about resident favorites.
The Prime Rib is most definitely a resident favorite! In fact, all the meat is deliciously tender. Parkview West Chef, Frederick Berthonnaud or Chef Fred, understands that this isn’t always a preference, but a necessity for the senior palette, so he always takes the time to cook the meat juuuuuuust right!
Other favorites come from the breakfast menu…made to order eggs and omelets are the top of the list! Breakfast is a cherished time for Chef Fred as well, since he enjoys the extra time in the mornings to talk with the residents, understanding not only their food preferences, but getting to know them. Parkview is all about relationships, and these residents are family to him.
Chef Fred comes from New Orleans, so some of his prized creations are Seafood Gumbo, New Orleans-style Crab Cakes, and of course Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce! In order to encourage heart health, steamed vegetable options are offered with every meal, entrée salads change every day, and fresh fruit is readily available at breakfast and other times throughout the day. If the chef is creating an outstanding fried entrée, it comes with a grilled or broiled option as well. Yum, good stuff!
Healthy eating does not mean flavorless or boring eating by any means at Parkwest! If you’re considering life as a resident, we invite you to stop in and try a meal first…we promise you’ll be hooked! (For further NIH nutritional recommendations for older adults, click here.)
