History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day, celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May (May 11th in 2025), honors mothers, motherhood, and the amazing maternal bonds between mother and child that lasts a lifetime. Mother’s Day’s origins date back to 1908 when Anna Jarvis held the first official Mother’s Day service at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, to commemorate her late mother, Ann Jarvis. Ann had organized “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” in the mid-19th century to promote health and hygiene among women in Appalachia.

Daughter Anna Jarvis’s vision for Mother’s Day was rooted in honoring her mama’s legacy and the sacrifices of mothers everywhere. A scant six years later, by 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day a national holiday. Over time, the holiday evolved from merely a day of motherly reverence into a commercial celebration, marked by gift-giving, flowers and cards. And don’t forget about hugs and kisses for Mom. And for goodness sake, don’t you DARE let your mother cook on HER day! Ironically, Anna Jarvis later protested the holiday’s commercialization, as she believed it detracted from her original intent of it being a holiday in the first place.

Celebrating Mother’s Day at Senior Independent Living Facilities

Mother’s Day holds special significance for mothers in senior independent living communities. Celebrating this day can foster connection and joy among residents who may be distanced from their families that don’t visit often enough for their tastes. For others, what a great opportunity for Mom to show off her kids to all her friends with a special surprise appearance. For the majority of moms, the presence of their children and grandchildren on Mother’s Day is their greatest gift. But here’s a list of creative ideas to make Mother’s Day the BEST EVER this year for Mom:

    • Breakfast in Bed: Start the day with her favorite breakfast served in bed, a classic gesture of love and appreciation
    • Family Photo Album: Create a photo album filled with cherished memories to reminisce and share together
    • Tea Party: Host a cozy tea party at home with her favorite teas and snacks, creating a warm atmosphere for family bonding
    • Favorite Restaurant: Treat her to a meal at her favorite restaurant for a special outing, and perhaps a walk in the park afterwards to enjoy more time in the outdoors together
    • Movie Marathon: Plan a movie marathon featuring her favorite films for a day of shared laughter and memories
    • Picnic: Organize a picnic in the park or backyard with her favorite foods for a relaxing outdoor experience
    • Participate in Her Favorite Hobby: Engage in her favorite hobby or activity together, fostering connection and shared joy

These ideas focus on creating meaningful moments for moms and showing your love and appreciation in ways that are both enjoyable and accessible for Mom, who also happens to be a senior citizen.

Here are our key takeaways from today’s blog:

  • Mother’s Day has only been around for just over 110 years in the US and was founded by the daughter of an Appalachian mother
  • Getting creative with ideas will surprise and delight your mom for her holiday. But the greatest gift will be your presence

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to honor the contributions of all mothers while creating moments of joy and connection for seniors. Thoughtful celebrations can make this day truly special for those who have nurtured generations through the bond of parenthood, and letting Mom know that her daily sacrifices in raising you are forever appreciated and helped shape you into the son or daughter you are today.
