Tennessee specifically is an amazing state to live in. Great people, a great climate with all four seasons and more! Parkview Senior Living has four community locations in the state, and while many Parkview residents are life-long Tennesseans, born and bred, there are seniors from all over the country looking for a great place to retire and continue living an active lifestyle while leaving some of their burdens behind. Let’s give them some reasons why our the south and our state is so popular and why Parkview Senior Living communities should be on their radar!
The inspiration for today’s blog comes from a recent article in Southern Living magazine which found Maryville, Tennessee to be one of the ten most affordable places to retire in the south. Three of the ten listed are coastal cities (North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Vero Beach, Florida and Orange Beach, Alabama) so being land-locked and on this list is quite the honor…
Parkview has Independent Senior Living communities in Maryville, nearby Knoxville (2) and also in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Maryville is a city of just 31,907 people, and less than 30 minutes away from incredible views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which also touts some amazing fly-fishing opportunities. The Maryville-Alcoa Greenway connects several scenic parks. Maryville College offers regular lectures, concerts and theater, as well as NCAA Division III games, plus a wooded campus with even more hiking trails. More than 18% of Maryville residents are over 65, so finding new friends for seniors will be easy. Plus, Maryville has a local hospital and is just 18 miles from Knoxville’s extensive medical options. For seniors wanting to save, Tennessee has no state income tax and estimated monthly housing costs are 3% lower than the south’s average number.
Speaking of Knoxville…Touting a population of around 198,000, Knoxville offers seniors tons of big-city entertainment and dining options, including Zoo Knoxville, University of Tennessee athletics (have you SEEN our football, basketball and baseball teams?) the opera, Knoxville Museum of Art, an active downtown scene and local, regional and national restaurant dining that rivals metropolis-sized cities. Knoxville hosted the 1982 World’s Fair, and was noted to be a ‘Scruffy Little City’, a perception which residents take pride in as they live under the Sunsphere which shines over the Knoxville skyline. Knoxville enjoys its proximity, as Maryville does, to the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as the vacation hot spot of Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, home of the world famous Dollywood and entertainment options galore. Cost of living, while growing, is still quite affordable compared to other similarly sized cities.
We implore you not to rule out Tullahoma as a retirement option. The 32nd most populated city in Tennessee (21,204 people), Tullahoma is home to the world-class Beechcraft Heritage Museum, the Aerospace Center of Excellence, a farmer’s market, arts center, plus recreation and shopping choices galore all in a smaller town with a big heart. For those who don’t mind a bit of a drive, Tullahoma is just 77 miles outside of Nashville, Tennessee, a mecca of living-life-to-the-fullest.
