“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.”  (Proverbs 16:31)

No matter what the Bible says about our silver locks, it’s tough to make the transition to go gray. We consider what others think (“How will I look at my class reunion?”) and we can’t really grasp that the person in the mirror has lived long enough to earn that crown of glory.

But did you know, gray hair is “cool” right now! No longer a sign of older age, young women are choosing various shades of silver simply because it is GORGEOUS!

If you’re ready to take the plunge, here are some approaches to help you through the transition:

Simply do it. Head to the salon for a touch-up just like you always do. But this time, wait a couple extra weeks and instead of matching your color, ask your hairdresser to match your gray. The first glance in the mirror will be a shock, so take this critical step before you shed a tear or make it public: Adjust your outfit and makeup. Your coloring has just changed! Gray can be a stunning conversation piece, but it can also instantly wash you out. Choose makeup and clothing that makes that new mane pop!

– OR –

Go gradually. Stretch out your salon visits to every 8-12 weeks. The transition to gray will grow on you as your hair does. While it extends, find a fresh cut and style that makes you eager for the new YOU. Once fully silver, get that cut, then treat yourself to a fresh outfit and lunch. “Old age” truly is a state of mind as you play with clothing styles and makeup colors that uniquely express YOU.

–THEN—

Learn your new hair.  Gray hair typically has a different texture than you may be used to. Shampoos, conditioners, and styling products need to be different as well. It’s true that gray hair typically will be more coarse or wiry. This does not have to remain true, though, due to the huge selection of products for gray that are available today.  Ask your stylist which may be best for you…and with all the money you’re saving on hair color, consider indulging in an occasional keratin treatment. This will help smooth, straighten, and make that crown shine!
