These long, dreary winter months are only as long and dreary as we make them! There’s still time to make 2023 a year to remember!

Exercise

For some reason, cooler weather causes us to be more sedentary. But staying active, especially through these extra-calorie holiday months, will keep your mind as happy as your body, so now’s the time to find something to DO. An endless supply of fitness videos and online exercise programs means you never have an excuse for not heading to “the gym.” Invite a friend over and start your day with coffee and movement. It’s a great idea to kick the winter blahs out first thing in the morning and set the tone for a cheery day! (Livestrong.com offers some great online suggestions for seniors.)

Book Club

Everything is more fun with a friend! Put together a list of classics that you’ve always wish you had read and find someone to join you. Need some suggestions? Click here for 1,764 of them!

Craft

You may be one of those who takes a knitting bag wherever you go…. or perhaps stained glass or even watercolors are your thing? Maybe you’ve always wanted to find a hobby but didn’t have the time or know where to start. Consider one of these amazing craft ideas and you may have your Christmas shopping list complete as well! Your children and grandchildren are sure to love something created by you that can be passed down for generations.

Bake

No doubt this activity will go hand-in-hand with “make a new friend” or instill the joy of baking with your favorite little person. Make a list of baked goods you’ve always wanted to try or create a family favorite on a weekly basis and share it with someone. Consider this… baking while listening to your favorite oldies! It’s a sure way to flood your mind with happy memories and may get you moving a bit as well!

Get Outdoors

Just because the months are cooler doesn’t mean outside is out of the question! Bundle up and explore the zoo, take a stroll through a local park, or head to a museum for the day. If you live in a typically warmer climate, the brisk air will be a welcome relief from the long summer heat. If there’s a steep chill in the air, remember everyone looks a little brighter when their cheeks have a hint of rosy!

Finally, no matter how you choose to spend your hours this season, remember that your mental health is essential during this time. If you dread the season because you fear it may be long and lonely, cross dread off your list today and plan for this to be the best winter ever!
